Corntassle Cottage Currently April

So much has happened, since the beginning of the year, and I decided that the best way to get back in the game, was to update you all with a Corntassle Cottage currently April post to fill you in! Are you having as hard of a time as I am believing that it is almost May?

As some, who follow me on Facebook know, back in January I started working on working out. I joined an accountability, challenge group with an old, high school friend. Accountability is a big thing for me and it is something that I struggle with daily. So after the challenge group finished, I made the choice to become a Team BeachBody coach, knowing that I would have to make the changes a true lifestyle.

January to April

January to April

My first month started with at least working out several times a week with a program or the treadmill. For my second and third months became the 60 day PiYo program, Now after taking a few days off I will be starting my fourth month Monday with another program, thinking about giving Turbo Jam a try again. I am not where I want to be, but I am happy where I am.

January to April

January to April

The first month of the year brought another change to the household, my hubby’s decision to find another job. Obviously it was a joint decision, and one that I had known was coming, but it was sad nonetheless. He had an attachment to many of the people that became a part of his life, which often happens when dealing with the older generation. However, as often happens with those in power, the power went to their heads. Now I also know that my hubby can be difficult in temperament, but how can I blame him for speaking up against unfairness?

By mid-March he had found another job, but the work is seasonal, labor intensive (tree removal), less per hour, if it rains he doesn’t work, and if he does work, the hours are long. However, he is happier and likes the guys that he works with, so we will tighten our belts, pray for the best and who knows where our dreams will take us! Hubs has even been helping a bit more around the house, which is kind of nice.

These past three months have had me focusing more on not only my calories, but also what I am eating. I have been trying to focus more on eating chicken, tuna, or eggs, and more fresh/frozen veggies and fruit. Another thing that I have been trying to do is cut down on all butter, salt, and sugar, to almost nothing, which was not as hard as I thought it would be. There have been a few slip ups and a few more treat days, with birthdays and anniversaries, but all in all I am proud to say that I have accomplished taking some of the unhealthy stuff away and replaced it with healthier choices.

For the hubby’s birthday, I bought him an online adventure fantasy game that is an enhanced version of an old PC game that I would watch him play, when we first got together. He runs a group of six characters, that he has fashioned after myself and each of the kids, including Clevis (our son from other parents). I will control the characters, every now and then, but I kind of just get a kick out of watching.

The hubs and I took the lil ones down to Arthur, Illinois, which is a great little Amish community. We went the a huge grocery store that is run by the Amish and bought tons of fresh baked breads, cheeses, pies, and other Amish goodies. Then we took them to an Amish smorgasbord restaurant, and of course we all ate too much!

Amish Horse and Buggy

The next day was no better, we took the kids up to visit the hubby’s aunt and uncle. We attended church with them, which was a lot of fun and then went back to their house for an amazing authentic Italian dinner of homemade lasagna and chicken cheesy Alfredo. Then the hubby’s uncle started playing the piano, for the kids, and they loved every minute of it.

Demon has been struggling these past few months, after leaving a job that he was unhappy at and going to a job that he found the pasture wasn’t any greener. This became a vicious cycle for a month or so and he let the bank take his new car, and moved out of his apartment and back to a roommate situation. I told him though, that maybe while his decisions would not have been ones that I would have taken, maybe they were ones that I should have taken. Honestly, I can say that I am proud of the adult decisions that he has made.

Lil one, has been drawing like crazy. She has even decided that she wants to start taking commissions to get paid for drawing. I am definitely trying to help her the best that I can. I am trying to encourage her to try drawing something outside of her normal medium, which is anime/manga styles, but she is young and doesn’t have the faith in her talent, just yet. She is also learning her knew keyboard, and I think with next school year, there will be some lessons of some sort for her.

Lil man is doing what he always does, playing video games online and chatting with his friends, or his new girlfriend. LOL! A girl that he has never met, in Montana. He does a podcast with some of his online gaming buddies and even does some commentary for gamer videos. Sometimes it is weird that they have such an online life, but it has its learning opportunities, too. I am just glad that I learned enough ahead of them, that they couldn’t get too sneaky.

Books have become an even bigger importance and I have really been working at reading types that will help me to be a better me. I am starting to see things that have held me back and really learning more about making changes. Trying to learn more focus and how to work harder at a better me, for myself as well as my family. I listened to The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson on YouTube and have almost finished reading Start by Jon Acuff. Then there have been various training videos and various other motivational works. It has been very interesting to learn so many new things. I always believed that we are never too old to learn.

These past few months have been a bit nerve wracking, and some days continue to be…but I am learning, growing, and living every day on faith. Loving and being thankful, each day for my hubby and my kids, and knowing that these changes are as much for them as for me.

These are the things that are happening at Corntassle Cottage currently April.

Holy cow…has a year really gone by…it seems like just yesterday, we were ringing in 2015…and now it is all of a sudden time for 2016! There were so many times as a kid that I wished the years would go by faster, being ready to grow up so fast. Now I only wish for the days to slow a bit, to savor each and every moment. Not wanting the kids to grow any faster than they need to, especially now that they are 22, 16, and 13 and one has already spread his wings.

All in all, the year has been good, with only a few storms along the way. Lil man is no longer with his girlfriend, and he got over the hurt. D-man made a decision that he thought would lead to greener grass, and found out that the grass was not always greener on the other side, but he is managing to stay positive and knowing it will all work out in the end. Lil miss has hit the ups and downs of puberty, with all of the drama that goes with it, but we will work through it.

In Entertainment News…

The two youngest attended a church conference, at the end of November, and lil miss got on stage to sing for a crowd of 300+ people that were in attendance! Enjoy the video below:

In Book News…

Wow, have I read some amazing books, this past year! Please check out this link, to find my reviews of the books that I have read! Books

The most recent books that I have read, have all been amazing, and very soon I will be sharing a review of three of the books together. I have read the first two, and just received the third in the series to read. This series of books was written by John & Carole Barrowman, (For those who don’t know, John Barrowman played Captain Jack Harkness from both Doctor Who and Torchwood, as well as Malcom Merlyn of Arrow and Carole is his sister.) And yes, I absolutely love John Barrowman!

The series is called “Hollow Earth” with the first book being titled as such, the second is “The Bone Quill“, and the third is “The Book of Beasts“. They are amazing young adult fantasy fiction, and I did not want to put them down! Here is a brief synopsis of the storyline:

Imagination matters most in a world where art can keep monsters trapped — or set them free.

Lots of twins have a special connection, but twelve-year-old Matt and Emily Calder can do way more than finish each other’s sentences. Together, they are able to bring art to life and enter paintings at will. Their extraordinary abilities are highly sought after, particularly by a secret group who want to access the terrors called Hollow Earth. All the demons, devils, and evil creatures ever imagined are trapped for eternity in the world of Hollow Earth—trapped unless special powers release them.

I also read John Barrowman’s first auto-biography, “Anything Goes”, which was so much fun to read! I just have to say that he was such a fun character to get to know and I am definitely looking forward to being able to get my hands on his second auto-biography…”I Am What I Am”!

The best part is, that I exceeded my “goodreads” challenge goal of 25 books for 2015, by reading 27!

All of the kids!

All of the kids!

The holidays went off without a hitch…well except for the Christmas tree! LOL! For both Thanksgiving and Christmas, all of the kids made an appearance, which always makes me happy. The tree went up, partially, then came back down again…pre-lit tree, with only half of the lights working…and more going out with each passing day! So…we took it apart, cut all of the lights off, re-assembled and bought new strands to put on the tree!

The kids and I made home made cinnamon apple Christmas ornaments, and we decorated them with some craft paint that I had on hand. It was so much fun spending that quality time with them…even D-man cut out a couple of ornaments!

Ornament Fun!

Ornament Fun!

We kept to our traditional Christmas dinner fare of finger foods, even though we did bake a ham. There were also meatballs, pepperoni, several kinds of cheese, crackers, pickles, olives, cheese ball, party mix, ranch crackers, fudge, and a variety of cookies! Eight different varieties of cookies…with a total of 16 batches mixed and baked…including roll out sugar cookies! I actually prepped and baked for several days!

The kids had a very simple Christmas, and they were happy. Lil man did not get the PS4 that he was dreaming of, nor did lil miss get the brand new electronic keyboard that she has her heart set on, but they both understood that it wasn’t in the cards for this year. They were happy with their new headphones & laptop cooling pads, a video game a piece, modeling clay for lil miss and a new PS3 controller for lil man, as well as a few fun stocking stuffers and some clothes from the thrift store.

While D-man was thrilled with a gift card, a few stocking stuffers, and several containers of home baked treats!

The hubs was the best gift recipient of all…with a new Kuerig brewer, that I was blessed to have won through a twitter party…he actually got a little choked up.

I also had to make sure that my other two kiddos had plenty of treats to take home…especially since my soon to be daughter in law, is going to have a baby! Such amazing news…to be told that I am going to be a grandma…even if it is in heart only.

There has also been a ton of rain that has hit our area, sadly leaving a few deaths and tons of flooding. I am thankful that we were lucky, managing to not have a flooded basement.

As for 2016, well, I have a few ideas for some things that I want to accomplish in the coming year, but that will be a post for another time and place. How was your 2015? Leave me a message in the comments with your thoughts!

Around Corntassle Cottage!

These last couple months, I have spent lots of time in the kitchen. Baking wheat biscuit, more strawberry oatmeal bars, chocolate energy balls, krispy treats, and trying to get a home made, brownie recipe just right! LOL! Which I swear I will get shared!

The hubs has been working a ton, starting with a local farm show, and then heading into a large renovation at work.

Lil miss’ had a great birthday! Getting a Lalaloopsy doll and the movie Coraline. She also got a dollhouse of her very own. She had to have Little Ceaser’s pizza, broccoli and cheese sauce, and a marble chocolate cake with chocolate whipped icing.

Lil man has decided all he wants for his birthday is dinner at his favorite restaurant. We have a restaurant in our area that is a buffet, and you can get steak dinners, too, so he will be in heaven!

I am fighting a losing battle sewing lil miss’ favorite snuggle pillow, it is seriously falling apart! The material is getting so thin from many washes and lots of love, that new holes keep popping up!

Stitching it closed.

Stitching it closed.

I re-screened our back screen door, for some reason the screen part was at the bottom of the door, and German Shepherd noses tend to go right through! One down and one more screen to go…

Back door screen.

Back door screen.

I have also gone back to work…well sort of. I will be cleaning house for one of the hubby’s friends, a couple of times a month. Which works for me, because it allows me to contribute, and it will really be an easy job, as it is a small place.

My Latest Reads…

My reading has slowed a bit these past couple of months, with getting the back in the groove of school, and extra time in the kitchen, I haven’t read as much as I would have liked…

I did read The Princess Bride by William Goldman and you can read all about it at The Princess Bride #PageTurners.

I also read, for #PageTurners, the Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick, which you can read about here, #PageTurner Silver Linings Playbook.

Be sure to check back at the end of October for the final #PageTurner book for the year, and I will share my thoughts on the book George by Alex Gino.

I have also requested a book from our local library titled, “Hollow Earth” written by John and Carole Barrowman, and I can’t wait for it to come in.

Other Fun Stuff…

On Labor Day, I got to go to our local library’s giant used book sale! I only came home with one bag of books for $5.00, and it is the paper kind of bag. D-man and I met up there…he walked away with two bags of books for $!0.00!

Last week, D-man grabbed me for one of our awesome dates…we hit some thrift stores, and then he took me to see the movie…The Martian and it was as amazing as the book, which I wrote about here. We ended our date with a trip to Red Lobster and it was wonderful!

Stuff I Am Watching…

I may be spending a bit more time than I should watching the island living shows on HGTV and I am equally addicted the awesome Halloween baking shows, and British baking shows. I am actually watching the Halloween Baking Championship, right now that I had on my DVR.

And on an oddly side note…as much as I love Halloween, I have yet to dig out any of our decorations. Maybe I should really get that accomplished!

The hubby and I are trying to play catch up on the first two seasons of Arrow on Netflix, and I am kind of looking forward to the new Jessica Jones series that will be coming to Netflix. Okay, I admit, it does have David Tennant in it!

Though I have not yet, reached my goal weight, I am proud of the progress that I have made. With about 20ish lbs. to go, trying to eat healthier, and cut out soda…but for the occasional, I will get to where I want to be.

I have been thrilled to offer a couple of reviews for some great products…DrainWig, Egg-Tastic, and K5 Learning. Be sure to check out my reviews!

Currently At Corntassle Cottage – Fourth Edition!

Currently…I sit here, on a Saturday night, dinner is long since over and the hubby has been asleep in his chair for almost 5 hours! LOL! For all of the hours that we go back and forth about who falls asleep more in the recliners, he or I. Now I admit to the occasional dose, but generally they are catnaps that last about 20 minutes to an hour. While my dear hubby will crash for 5 or more hours, and I have to say it occurs most days!

Currently…the thoughts going through my head are all of the things that I should be doing, as opposed to typing this. But hey, I just painted my nails so the dishes that I should be doing, will likely wait til tomorrow. I should be rolling smokes, but I’m not messing up my nails! I painted them, partially so they would look nice for church tomorrow, but also so they will grow.

Nails done!

Nails done!

Currently…I am hoping the $80.00 worth of groceries that I bought, will get us through two and a half weeks. If our battery had not gone out on “Nessie”, I would have had an extra $80 bucks. But again, I am thankful that I had a few dollars come in from blogging campaigns, to give me what I had. And I was able to get some fresh locally grown corn, peaches, lemons, and bananas.

Currently…I am thinking, Why can’t Hollywood come up with an original thought? I mean, I see a lot of remakes coming to the screen, but very little originality. I am excited for the Martian to come out later this year, and even more excited to see “Ready Player One” towards the end of 2017! But remakes of Nightmare on Elm Street, Ghostbusters, and even all of the super heroes is getting a bit ridiculous.

Currently…I am wondering, how much longer are we going to have to hear about the Kardashians, Jenners, Duggars, and all of the other wacky people that are broadcast into our homes each week? I honestly don’t watch any of them, nor do I watch any of the Bad Girls, Rich Housewives, or anything of its kind. That stuff just isn’t for me! Mostly it is the screaming that drives me insane, but there is also the catty behavior that irritates me, too.

Currently…I am hoping that D-man is having a fabulous time! He took his first alone trip down to Missouri to have a visit with his stepsister and her boyfriend. They are from Vegas, and there visiting with his folks, but they rented a room to have a place to hang and likely do a bit of partying. LOL! I am glad that he is getting the chance to see her.

Currently…I am pondering the recipes that I might make, to fill in some of the gaps. One thing I will put together will be some oatmeal, strawberry bars, and I will possibly have a banana or two left to add to some that I have frozen for a loaf or two of banana bread. I would also love to make some lemon bars of some type, and of course something chocolatey for the kids!

Currently…I am proud of myself for the weight that I have lost. I have cut out Mountain Dew, and drinking strictly green tea or chamomile/mint tea with a cinnamon stick added to the brew. It does have sugar, but it is less than I would normally use. I am also really surprising myself at how much water I am drinking! I normally hate water, but for some reason, I am almost craving it now! My weight started out at about 180, at the beginning of 2015, and now I am down to 148! I still have about 20 or 25 pounds to go, but I am proud of where I am, especially with no exercise other than mowing the lawn!

Currently…I am not allowing myself to worry about things too much, knowing that it will all work out in the end. I know that I am blessed with a home, a wonderful family, my blog is slowly growing, and earning a few extra dollars, and friends that I have made both near and far. I am currently thankful for it all!

D-man turns 22, today! Holy cow, where have the years gone? How did he become a man, so quickly? He just recently, well in the last couple of months, and now he will be starting a new job at the beginning of August, and he just bought himself a new car! I cannot express how proud of him, I am.

He is coming over to spend the day with us, have dinner. I am thrilled to have some fresh corn on the cob to go with dinner and 2 pans of homemade brownies, that I will dust with powdered sugar. The house smells wonderful right now, it is going to be hard to wait!

In Learning News

At the request of my dear friend, and twinsie, Echo from The Mad Mommy, I guest posted, for a new site that she is a collaborator for, homeschooling4free, which offers tons of homeschooling resources, for free!

High School Homeschooling Supplies

High School Homeschooling Supplies

I have all of the papers and such put together in a binder, for both kids, for the coming school year. Most of what we do is online, but there are some worksheets that go along with and some of it I just wanted to see the physical work, lil miss has been a bit sneaky in previous years. I also have a math workbook that she will do, based on her grade level, because again, proof of completion! LOL!

Lil miss' Binder for the year!

Lil miss’ Binder for the year!

I have actually started getting all of their work, put together for the remainder of their school years. I even have a basic transcript, based on the class work that lil man has chosen up to this point, for his high school years. This includes the basics of math, literature, science, and history, plus a bit of religious history with learning a basic understanding of all religions, as well as computer, typing, Microsoft Office, forensics, and a personal budgeting program that I am going to put together, which will pretty much cover him no matter what he chooses.

Lil mans Binder for the year!

Lil mans Binder for the year!

The best part, is that I will be able to save it all for when it is lil miss’ turn for these grades. All I will have to do is make a few minor adjustments for classes, because she will focus more on the arts than he will. I starting putting it all together in Microsoft OneNote Notebook, but changed it to a document instead, and I like it so much better.

I still have yet to touch my yarn, to learn to crochet! LOL! Maybe during the winter months, when I no longer have to mow the yard! LOL!

In Other News…

Lil man spent a week at summer camp, and had a wonderful time getting to know a few different kids, since he attended a high school camp this year.

Lil man wearing make up! LOL! Kids!

Lil man wearing make up! LOL! Kids!

Lil miss, stayed home with me that week, and on one of the days, D-man came to get us for a thrift shopping and lunch date! We had a great time!

I still have a few recipes that I have yet to write up and share, but oddly, I can’t figure out if I am fond of the recipe app that I use, or not!

I have also been working on losing some weight, since coming home from vacation. I started putting a bit more focus on cutting down on the amount of soda that I take in and the amount of calories that I consume.

I am happy to say that I have managed to lose about 25 pounds total, and would be happy to drop maybe 25 more. I know that I could do it quicker, if I managed to fit in a workout routine, for now, weekly yard mowing is giving me something at least! I am thinking that this winter, I will start working on the Tai Chi videos that I purchased last month.

Corntassle Cottage Chronicle Second Edition!

Welcome to the second edition of the Corntassle Cottage Chronicle!

Well I have to say that I am indeed a bit later at getting this one out than I had originally intended. What can I say…April has been crazy busy!

Corntassle Cottage News…Last fall lil miss began her “Faith Quest” process, in preparation for her baptisim. On March 29th, she stood in front of our congregation and read her confession of faith. Such a proud parent moment! Then on Easter Sunday she was baptized into the church. Her dad and I were both proudly sitting in the second pew, with D-man sitting alongside, all while lil man watched from behind a camera.

Kids on Easter Sunday!

Kids on Easter Sunday!

We were also finally able to take our family vacation. We weren’t sure that it was going to happen. One of the hubby’s employee’s had a family issue that he had to take care of, but thankfully he has a great crew and the other two pulled together, to make it happen. I will be working on sharing all of our amazing adventures in the coming days!

Books that I have been reading…I have been reading like a mad-woman! LOL! Since my First Edition post, I have read several more books.

At the end of March, I read Cary Elwes’ book “As You Wish” The Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride and it was amazing! You can read about it by clicking on the image below.

As You Wish by Cary Elwes!

As You Wish by Cary Elwes!

Then I listened to the audio recording for the April Page Turners book selection, The Martian by Andy Weir. Sadly, our library did not have a hard copy of the book, but listening to it was kind of cool! I will be sharing my thoughts and answering the questions that will be given by the hosts of the Page Turners book club, at the end of April!

The other books that I read were “Tis Herself: A Memoir” by Maureen O’Hara and “No Choice But Seduction” by Johanna Lindsey. They were both amazing! I have always loved Maureen O’Hara. She is strong, beautiful, and just plain amazing and I think even more now, after reading her book. As for the other, well it is another sequel to the Mallory novels, and definitely ranks tops for me!

No Choice

Stay tuned for a couple of upcoming book reviews, on top of my Page Turners review!

Learning Corner…Well I have started on my lesson plan for the kids. Right now I am using the Microsoft One Notebook, creating one for grades 6 – 8 and one for 9 – 12th. I may have to revise that at some point and simply do one for each grade, because I am adding in some quizzes and tests, but also some study sheets.

As I said, in my First Edition, I was going to try to teach myself how to crochet…well I have not even found the time to fit it in! I even got “Crocheting for Dummies” at the library, but have yet to pull it out!

In Other News…As I indicated earlier, I will be having some book reviews on the blog in the coming weeks. There will also be some sharing of vacation adventures, and a couple of recipes, just for fun!

Would you like to become a permanent host or monthly co-host for This Momma’s Meandering Mondays? I welcome you to fill out the form below and I will be in contact!

If you would like to swap questions with me and take part in the fun, simply fill in the form below and I will be in contact with you!

Until next time…thank you so much for reading the second edition of the Corntassle Cottage Chronicle!

Corntassle Cottage Chronicle First Edition!

Something that I have been wanting to accomplish, during the new year, and that was to create a re-curring post entitled the Corntassle Chronicle to focus on the mundane day to day happenings. I had actually wanted to start it closer to the beginning of the year, but best laid plans and all that.

I am still deciding on the frequency and I suppose that it will depend on the amount of adventures to share, but maybe we will try monthly and then go from there. They will likely be a bit random and maybe even a rambling or two.

As previously reported, in Time for Change, lil miss now has short, cropped, pink tipped, hair and a new pair of glasses. She looks so grown up and absolutely adorable. My lil girl is growing so quickly.

Books that I have been reading…The reading bug has overtaken me since joining up with PageTurners, and I have been loving every minute of it. So far, besides reading each of the ones listed above, I have also read several others that were also wonderful!

I have got two books on hold at our local library and the announcement will come in a few days for the April PageTurners book selection. I am so happy to be reading more!
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions…We spent a month just in the deciding, not only in the where but in the when, as well. We had a plan for the dates and then for purposes of work for hubby and other responsibilities, which made them change. We even took our truck in for some repairs and updates in preparation for the trip.

There was of course the thoughts for where to go…at first ideas pointed us toward an east coast visit, hit some sites like Salem and Scituate Massachusetts, then for a stop at Colonial Williamsburg, and even a beachside stay on Nags Head, and maybe if I was really lucky a visit with a blogging friend. The original dates had put us still a bit too close for the option of bad weather and then the ideas that hubby wanted a bit more relaxation which in turn made us re-think our plans all together.

We have completely changed course and have decided to head back to Gatlinburg, Tennessee with the kids, which is where the hubby and I spent our honeymoon thirteen years ago. We will also be stopping in Kentucky at a donut place in Louisville and Cane Ridge in Paris, Kentucky before heading to the Smoky Mountains! We will stay in a cabin and going to the Aquarium, maybe we will have a picnic and definitely see some beautiful scenery.

A Dream Come True…I finally got my very own Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer! It was kind of a Valentine’s Day, Birthday, and Anniversary present. I was lucky that the one that I purchased came with a rebate to get a free grinder attachment and I found a great sale with a coupon for the ice cream maker attachment! Needless to say it is a dream come true!

Learning corner…Well I have been toying around with a few ideas both for the kids’ schooling…Ideas that might allow for a more focused and personalized course of study for the kids, well at least making sure that some things I find important are taught. Like personal finance, budgeting bills, balancing checkbooks, and all the other things that we face as adults everyday! I planning some type of plan, so we will see what I can come up with.

A few weeks ago, I purchased yarn and crochet hooks so that I can teach myself how to crochet…I am a bit slow at getting tasks accomplished but we will get there. I bought several different sized hooks and probably a dozen different colors as a start. Maybe I could get good enough to sell some…or make wonderful keepsakes for generations to come.

In Other News…In the works is a post that I have been somewhat remiss at getting done, mostly because I started having some chrome issues and just completely forgot! I am humbled to have been recognized by two fellow bloggers for blogging awards!

I have a number of recipes that I need to write up and share and many more that I want to make and share, especially with my beautiful new mixer! Maybe even overcome my fear of yeast and make some bread, fresh homemade bread!

The book that is in my head has changed somwhat in the basis…it was a little close to what I know, so we will see what direction it takes.

Exercising or at least adding it to the time management of my day has been another challenging thing to accomplish. I know it is really something that I need to quit making excuses for and just get it done!

Well what do you think of the first edition of the Corntassle Cottage Chronicle, I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions!
