Amanda is the mommy to Madison from Growing Up Madison in which Madison shares all of her fabulous adventures in life! Amanda was given the name Annmarie at birth, but is known as Amanda throughout the blogging community. She is a mother of 4 and a former US Army Medic. I just recently retired and I’m now considered a SAHM. I have 4 children ranging in ages from 19 – 3 and every day in my household is a test of my patience and sanity.
1. I love the name of your blog “This Momma’s Ramblings”, how did you happen to come up with such a unique name?
I actually started thinking about this before I became a SAHM and it kind of went like this…My three kids all call me momma and since the blog was going to kind of focus on mommyhood, that fit. As for the “Ramblings”, well, I have been told that I do tend to ramble on a bit…though nothing like my two youngest! LOL! As soon as I thought it…the name just felt right and This Momma’s Ramblings was born.
2. You mentioned recently about overcoming your anxiety. Is there any advice for someone like me who suffer the same thing?
Well in some cases, I kind of try to think of myself as a different person…one who is strong, confident, and ready to whoop the world, sort of like an actor playing a role. Another side of it comes from fierce determination and learning that while I don’t like being in certain situations, once I am in the thick of things, it often turns out just fine. Kind of like conquering my fears gives me strength.
3. Now let’s get on to homeschooling. What made you decide to home school?
We first started thinking about his journey, because our district superintendent was only interested in her own agenda, not about the kids. The education they were getting was seriously lacking in every way. Then my middle one started getting bullied and not just by other kids, but by teachers, too and that is where we drew the line.
4. Homeschooling is something that I’ve been looking into now that I’m retired and at home. What advice do you have for those wanting to start the journey of homeschooling.
I say do your research and go for it! Research your state laws, join groups on FB, and find a program or ideals that work best for you. I am lucky, because the state that I live in all I had to do was send a letter to the school that my younger ones attended and tell them they would not be back. Otherwise we don’t have any state requirements to fulfill.
5. What is a typical day in your household like?
I am normally up around 5:30 every morning, and if it is a non school day, the kids get up whenever. I will do some writing on my own or reading of other blogs and enjoy a bit of time to myself. If it is a school day, the kids will get up around 8 or 9, have something to eat, get their chores done, and get started on school work for the day. Depending on how long they jack around will depend on how long they have to work…some days are better than others.
I normally start thinking about dinner, between 2 or 3, followed by getting dishes done. The kids then meander on to their rooms to do their various endeavors…lil man is normally on the computer or PS3, he is my gamer, and lil miss is on her computer or keyboard, she is my artist and musician.
Hubby goes to bed between 8 and 9, so I will go back to my computer to write or whatever else I need to get done, and maybe watch some television or listen to music. Then somewhere between 1 or 2 in the morning I am heading off to bed.
6. I know you no longer have toddlers but what do you miss about your children being toddlers?
I actually kind of miss that they weren’t so into their own things, and spent more time with me.
7. Would you say that your children are a lot easier to deal with as teenagers?
I am super happy to say that I have an amazing relationship with them at 12, 15, and 21, we are very close. The younger two tend to bicker a bit, but they are just under 3 years apart in age and an opinionated boy and girl! LOL!
8. Any plans for the summer now that school is out or almost out?
Lil man will be going to church camp in about a week and a half, which will leave lil miss and I to hang for a week. I am however, taking them to get signed up for the summer reading program through our local library, tomorrow. Otherwise, we will mainly be hanging out at home.
9. I’m joyously awaiting the day when I’m all alone and no longer have someone wanting to follow me into the bathroom when I’m doing my business. What’s on your bucket list for life as an empty nester?
Read, read, and more reading! LOL! I miss being able to do that daily! I would love to be able to travel the world, but unless I win the Publisher’s Clearing House or the lottery, I will have to rely on my books for adventure to faraway places!
10. Tell us something that you wish you had done in the past or would still like to do in the future. We want to know. 🙂
I dream of going to Scotland and standing at the ruins of Urquhart Castle staring out over Loch Ness! Maybe even taking a Doctor Who themed tour of Great Britain! 🙂
