“As You Wish” has brought a flutter to many a female heart, no matter the age. I know that it certainly has mine, from the moment that I first watched The Princess Bride, so many years ago! I find myself watching it anytime it airs on television, and I own the movie on dvd. I also, like many parents, have shared this movie with the children as well. It is one that my kids count among their favorites, as much as I do.
The movie came out, when I was about 14 or so, and I was hopelessly romantic at that age! LOL! What girl wouldn’t love to have someone like Westley?! I mean, be still my beating heart! I have also always been drawn to the times of yore, princes and princesses, and castles, swords, and of course, giants! Not to mention growing up watching Andre in the wrestling ring and definitely thought that he was amazing! So of course this would be the kind of movie that I would love…and love I do!
When I found out in late 2014 that Cary Elwes was writing a book titled, As You Wish: The Inconceivable Tales From The Making Of The Princess Bride, I was super excited. I definitely wanted to read it! Last week, I finally remembered to check our local library to see if they had a copy and while they didn’t, they could borrow it from another library and I could then check it out. Yay!
What an amazing story! Cary wrote with such a heartfelt care that made the feelings that they shared on set, pour from the pages. The laughter and comraderie that was shared in these pages was priceless! I laughed so hard, at one point in the book, that I had tears rolling down my face! Reading stories that were shared by fellow cast members, their own thoughts on being a part of such a momentous experience. Learning some the of behind the scenes stuff, that I could see the scenes from the movie in my head, was fantastic! Reading about changes that were made esthetically, different than what made it into the movie, made it all the more amazing!
So for those of you, who fall more in love with this movie each time you watch it, then this is definitely a must read for you! Because you will love the movie all the more for it. Thank you to Cary for sharing this story and for sharing Westley, Buttercup, Fezzik, Vizzini, Inigo, Count Rugan, Prince Humperdink, Valerie, Miracle Max, and of course the Giant with us all one more time!
